Medios de comunicación y violencia de género

2009

This project made use of several methodologies to analyse the self-representation of teenagers and the romantic relationship in cultural media contents (videoclips, TV series, social networks). A study of the content analysis of 355 entries on the social network Fotolog was carried out for studying the type of information shared by adolescents on the Web 2.0 and how they present themselves online.

The variables studied were related to the use of the platform, the personal information revealed, and the representational strategies employed (the analysis included nicknames chosen, profile pictures, text associated with the image, and comments left by friends and other users). The results indicate that adolescents give up a portion of their privacy in exchange for popularity, regularly posting eroticized images of themselves and relating their intimate experiences.

Nevertheless, the sexualisation differs with gender in that it reproduces traditional stereotypes; the boys convey strength and activity by highlighting muscularity, while the girls exhibit beauty and fragility.
