ECCOLTUR. “Economía colaborativa y espacios turísticos: contribuciones, transformaciones y retos” (Collaborative economics and tourist spaces: contributions, transformations and challenges). Programa estatal de Investigación, Desarrollo e innovación orientada a los Retos de la Sociedad. Dirección General de Investigación Científica y Técnica. Subdirección General de Proyectos de Investigación. Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad. 2018-2020.

The ECCOLTUR project considers the general scientific objective of analysing the transformations that the sharing economy (SE) is generating in tourist spaces and their effects on the development, competitiveness and sustainability of tourist destinations at different scales and contexts with a clear intention of transfers of knowledge. Given the novelty of the theme, this also entails the development of an innovative analytical, conceptual and methodological framework for its analysis and understanding and approaching the phenomenon from a multiscalar and comparative perspective. It comes from the hypothesis that the sharing economy has emerged in an irruptive way in today’s society, particularly in tourism, generating transformations, conflicts and impacts of all kinds. In the field of tourism, SE ecosystems add new alternative proposals to conventional production and consumption models and, at the same time, their introduction into tourist spaces tends to generate tensions and disruptive products that cause impacts on traditional sectors. These new ways of functioning obey to global logics rooted in social movements but also to their exploitation by capitalism of platforms that result in the inequality of the impacts on a local scale and in a complexity of the phenomenon. In this context, tourism provides a heuristic environment to understand these elements as well as the challenges and opportunities that the SE can offer to create new economic models and to contribute to the generation of more sustainable societies.

MOVIMENTS. “Reconeixement i anàlisi dels moviments ciutadans de resistència i protesta davant els impactes del creixement del capitalisme de plataforma turístic. El cas de la ciutat de Barcelona”. (Recognition and analysis of citizen movements of resistance and protest against the impacts of the growth of capitalism on the tourist platform). Convocatòria d’Ajuts de la UOC per a Projectes de Recerca Interdisciplinària. Universitat Oberta de Catalunya i La Caixa. 2018.

The present proposal arises from the willingness to create an inter-studies collaboration between four UOC research groups to address a critical reflection on the movements of resistance and protest against the impacts of the growth of platform capitalism in tourism in the last years and taking advantage of the laboratory that represents the city of Barcelona. Its main objectives are: 1) To create a solid theoretical and methodological framework regarding the main aspects that characterize these movements of resistance and protest as well as its impact, taking into account the most relevant literature from an interdisciplinary perspective, 2) Understand and characterize the discourses of resistance and / or protest generated in social networks due to the growth of platform capitalism in the tourism context of Barcelona.
