Sustainable Development Goal 4 calls for inclusive and equitable quality education that promotes lifelong learning opportunities, and as we have seen during the COVID-19 confinement, online learning can play a key role.

In a context where lifelong learning becomes crucial to maintaining graduate employability, innovative teaching methodologies that promote employable skills in online environments are especially desirable.

This is what the article published by Àngels Fitó Bertran and María Jesús Martínez Argüelles, members of the Management & eLearning (MeL) group, together with Dolors Plana Erta, is about. The article titled “Impact of using authentic online learning environments on students’ perceived employability”, was published in the journal Educational technology research and development in the year 2022.

About the article

The article discusses the importance of lifelong online education in promoting employability, especially in the context of the United Nations Agenda 2030. It focuses on the development of employability skills through online educational techniques and presents statistics showing the perceived improvement in various employability competencies.

In addition, the study demonstrates that the application of online authentic learning environments can improve students’ perception of employability skills acquisition. The relevance of using technologies to recreate authentic environments is highlighted, although it is stressed that the quality of authenticity depends on how the learning process is designed.

The article concludes that the creation of authentic learning environments in online courses can significantly improve students’ competency profiles, which in turn strengthens employability. It is suggested that this methodology can provide a viable solution to strengthen student employability in virtual environments where internships may not be feasible.

However, limitations in the study are noted, such as the influence of students’ personal characteristics on the responses and the need for further research to validate the results in different educational and cultural contexts.
