La televisión infantil frente a los niños menores de 6 años

2008

The project focuses on the quality of audiovisual content aimed at children up to five years of age. From a psychological, pedagogical and evolutionary point of view, this group of viewers is of great importance because it incorporates the most sensitive, the least critical and expert audience.

However, official statistics do not include children under six years of age in the audience controls. Educators, aware of the great use that children make of this means of communication, agree in demanding quality children’s television programming.

But what are the characteristics of a quality program for children? Since the concept of television quality is not very universal and is closely related to the objective of the promoter of the analysis (the definitions are usually different if the director of a television station or a group of families is surveyed), there is no universally accepted model in the literature for analyzing children’s content that would allow the quality of such content to be evaluated.

The study raises the following questions: Is it possible to establish which children’s programs are really suitable for children of different ages, based on the evidence of human evolution, beyond any ethical or moral argument?

If so, at what age does the physiological and cognitive development of children allow them to access the television medium and correctly interpret the content of its messages? What would be the assessment of children’s programs broadcast by Catalan television?
