Is presence important in online training programs?

Nowadays, it is increasingly common to combine face-to-face learning methodologies with online learning methodologies in training programs. Furthermore, following the urgent need to carry out all types of teaching virtually during the Covid-19 pandemic, many programs, once the state of alert has passed, continue to adopt training models that combine in-person and virtual learning.

This topic is what the article we present today is about, which is published by Cintia Pla García, David Roman Coy and Enric Serradell López, the three members of the Management and eLearning (MeL) research group. The scientific article has been published in the journal Campus Virtuales in 2024.

Methodology

A methodology based on a detailed analysis of the literature was used, supported by a snowball sampling design, common in qualitative research. In total, 353 articles were analyzed, of which 121 were selected as the most relevant for the study.

Results and conclusions

It has been concluded that blended learning offers more benefits than exclusively online or in-person training, thanks to technological advancement and the improvement of tools such as videoconferencing and video games.

These technologies are complemented by traditional learning methodologies, enhancing social contact and essential elements of teamwork, such as communication and trust. The integration of blended models, which combine online and in-person learning, has been shown to improve flexibility and learning opportunities.

In addition, physical presence fosters interpersonal relationships, reduces isolation and improves collaboration, which translates into better evaluations, lower abandonment and greater satisfaction among participants.

While online learning saves time and is important for personal development, face-to-face interaction improves group cohesion and student satisfaction. Therefore, planning training programs must consider the appropriate time to incorporate in-person activities, as this affects the perception of quality and student satisfaction.

In summary, the combination of appropriate methodologies can improve teamwork dynamics and the use of the higher education training program, contributing to a more efficient and satisfactory training experience.
