In the field of foreign language learning, we have a considerable variety of applications targeted to help students improve in language mastery. According to several authors, the motivational element that one can found in these resources is essential for the learning process of second languages.

Learning activities which are focused from a playful side do apparently expand students’ interest in performing their tasks; therefore, it is not surprising that second language teachers contemplate gamification as a very attractive element to be explored.

The scientific article that we present today talks about this topic, which is written by Amanda García Álvarez and Enric Serradell López, the latter member of the Management & e-Learning (MeL) research group. The article was published in the journal Research on Education and Media in 2022.

About the article

The article presents a comprehensive research endeavor aimed at investigating the influence of gamification on university students’ motivation in learning Spanish as a foreign language. The study is part of a doctoral thesis data-collection phase and seeks to address the research question of how gamification impacts students’ motivation in language learning.

To achieve this goal, the researchers have developed a gamified system tailored for university students studying Spanish as a second language. This system is designed to engage students through game elements and narratives, ultimately aiming to enhance their motivation and learning outcomes. Additionally, a questionnaire has been created to collect data on students’ motivation levels before and after the implementation of the gamified system.

The study emphasizes the importance of considering external factors and game elements that influence students’ motivation in language learning. By analyzing the data collected through the questionnaire and academic results, the researchers aim to provide empirical insights into the effectiveness of gamification in enhancing students’ motivation and engagement in language learning.

Overall, the article underscores the significance of innovative approaches like gamification in educational settings and highlights the potential of gamified systems to positively impact students’ motivation and learning experiences. The research findings are expected to contribute valuable knowledge to the field of language education and inform future strategies for enhancing student motivation in foreign language learning contexts.
