The NODES research group from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) had a prominent role at the conference “The Crossroad of International Environmental Law Enforcement”, which took place on December 2 and 3, 2024, at the UOC headquarters in Barcelona. The event was jointly organized by the UOC and the interest groups of the European Society of International Law (ESIL) on international environmental law and the European and international rule of law.

The conference explored the adequacy of legal regimes in addressing the specificities, objectives, and ethics of international environmental law in the context of the Anthropocene. Within this framework, Briana Bombana, a postdoctoral researcher from the NODES group, presented the paper “Reframing Environmental Governance in the Anthropocene: Reviewing Biocentric and Ecocentric Alternatives”, co-authored with Gabriela Fauth and Pep Vivas i Elias, also members and researchers of the group. Bombana participated in the panel Reimagining Environmental Governance and Enforcement in a Fragmented Legal Landscape, moderated by Ana García Juanatey (CEI International Affairs), alongside researchers from institutions such as West Virginia University, the Judiciary of the Government of Uganda, the European University Institute, and the National Distance Learning University.

The panel discussions focused on the need for a legislative framework and international relations strategies to tackle challenges such as climate change and international migration. Specifically, the NODES group emphasized the importance of new epistemologies and ontologies that offer alternatives to address the complexity of the current era, extending beyond the issue of climate change.
In conclusion, the participation of the NODES group highlighted their commitment to rethinking environmental governance in response to the challenges of the Anthropocene. Their contributions reinforced the UOC’s and Catalan research’s leadership in developing innovative and interdisciplinary solutions to global challenges.
