Summer’s just round the corner. Long days, lots of free time, so why not make the most of it to read something in English? I’ll give you some tips and advice on what is out there for you to read in a minute, but before, a few statistics.
The average number of books read a year by one person, according to the Pew Research Centre in the USA is 12. Women read more than men and affluent women read the most! In 2017 the bestselling books according Barnes and Noble include Camino Island by John Grisham, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and a book with a very optimistic title, Understanding Trump by Newt Gingrich.
On the Net there are lots of people recommending good reads. Bill Gates is even doing it. Watch this video to see what he suggests.
So what would be a good 2017 summer read? Well, it all depends on your level and your tastes. Most of you who are at a B2 level should be able to cope with an original version book, though it helps if you read it on a Kindle or similar device. That way you can check the meaning of words you don’t know at the click of a button!
Have a look at some of the videos available in YouTube for good summer reads or better still, if you have just recently read a good book in English, post a message with the title, author, one or two words about what the book is about and why you liked it. That way we can all help each other.
One of my summer reads is going to be Pulse by Julian Barnes. If you haven’t read anything by this British author, try this collection of short stories. You’ll enjoy them, I’m sure. And short stories are always easier to digest than a complete novel.
