El grado de Técnicas de Aplicaciones de Software: las opiniones de sus estudiantes

¿Quieres dirigir tu carrera profesional hacia el desarrollo de software? Hoy en día los perfiles de desarrollo de software son algunos de los más demandados por las empresas a nivel nacional, europeo e internacional. El U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predice un crecimiento del 22% entre 2019 y 2029 en ofertas de trabajo para desarrollo de software. Y el Mapa del Empleo de la Fundación Telefónica, Infojobs y Tecnoempleo indica que los empleos de desarrollo de software, desarrollo web y administración de sistemas son las más demandadas en España, con un incremento de casi el 20% durante el 2021.
A raíz de la elevada demanda de personas expertas en estos ámbitos, en 2021 pusimos en marcha el grado de Técnicas de Aplicaciones de Software. ¿El objetivo? Proporcionar conocimientos sobre el proceso de desarrollo de software y de todas las etapas de su ciclo de vida, así como de los lenguajes de programación, las herramientas y las tecnologías más utilizadas para construir software para diferentes plataformas.
Ahora que ha terminado el primer año del curso, descubrimos la experiencia de Jana Kunecova y Nordin Zaidi, dos estudiantes del grado de Técnicas de Aplicaciones de Software. ¡No te lo pierdas!
Jana Kunecova: “Está siendo una experiencia muy enriquecedora: he podido entender en qué consiste la programación e introducirme a varias materias”
Jana Kunecova es investigadora predoctoral en la Universitat de Girona, una tarea que compagina con su trabajo como asesora acreditada en ACCIÓ. Kunecova asegura que siempre le ha interesado la informática y las telecomunicaciones. Por este motivo, en septiembre de 2021 decidió empezar a cursar el grado de Técnicas de Aplicaciones de Software en la UOC. “Siempre me han gustado las matemáticas, y cuando tuve que decidir qué estudios universitarios cursar dudé entre telecomunicaciones y comercio internacional. Finalmente, me decanté por el comercio internacional, ámbito en el cual trabajé durante más de 10 años. Pero el ámbito de la informática me seguía llamando la atención y, tras descubrir este nuevo grado online de la UOC, decidí probarlo”, explica.
Ahora que ha terminado el primer curso del grado, asegura que “está siendo una experiencia muy enriquecedora”. “He podido introducirme en diferentes materias y empezar a intuir en qué consiste la programación. En muchas de las asignaturas podía contar con buen apoyo por parte del profesorado para seguir avanzando, y en otras ocasiones también me he apoyado en la comunidad de estudiantes”, explica. Y advierte: “Las asignaturas no tienen el mismo grado de dificultad que las materias que se imparten en otras carreras, por lo que hay que tener en cuenta que el tiempo que se les tendrá que dedicar es superior”.
Kunecova asegura que una de las cosas que más le está sorprendiendo del programa son las herramientas y tecnologías que se presentan en las distintas asignaturas. “Las herramientas que más me han gustado son CalcMe para matemáticas, CodePen para diseño web y Codelite para programación en C”, relata. Además, considera que cursar el grado de Técnicas de Aplicaciones de Software la puede ayudar a abrirse camino en el sector de la bioingeniería y la inteligencia artificial, además de darle la oportunidad de trabajar en una empresa internacional una vez se haya graduado.
Para compaginar los estudios con su actividad profesional y personal, Kunecova organiza su agenda al detalle. “Cada hora del día (y a veces de la noche) la tengo organizada entre el trabajo, los estudios, la familia y el deporte. Me gusta mucho correr por la montaña: creo que es importante hacer deporte para estar en buena forma física para poder afrontar todas las tareas con éxito”, asegura.
El consejo de Jana Kunecova para futuros estudiantes
“Calcula bien las horas semanales que puedes dedicar a los estudios y, dependiendo de estas horas, calcula cuántas asignaturas puedes cursar. Apóyate en la comunidad de estudiantes y en el profesorado en todo momento. Poco a poco empezarás a disfrutar”.
Nordin Zaidi: “He aprendido mucho desde el primer día. Quiero seguir avanzando para poder graduarme y mejorar en mi carrera laboral”
Después de siete años aprendiendo sobre desarrollo de software de manera autodidacta, Nordin Zaidi decidió empezar a cursar el grado de Técnicas de Aplicaciones de Software en la UOC. “Sentía que necesitaba formalizar mis conocimientos y seguir un programa específico para poder dar el salto al siguiente nivel. Quería especializarme en desarrollo de software y dejar las otras áreas de la ingeniería informática aparte. Fue entonces cuando di con el grado de la UOC y encontré exactamente lo que necesitaba”, explica.
Tras dos semestres cursando el programa, asegura que no se arrepiente de haber empezado estos estudios. “A pesar de haber estudiado por mi cuenta y venir bastante curtido con experiencia laboral, he aprendido mucho desde el primer día. Siento que todo lo que yo había estudiado antes se va solidificando con la estructura que la UOC me está proporcionando”, relata. Y añade: “Los conocimientos que he obtenido durante el primer curso ya me están ayudando en mi trabajo. Espero poder seguir avanzando, aprendiendo y obtener el grado por orgullo propio, para demostrar que es posible a cualquier edad a pesar de las obligaciones que se tengan y para que me ayude en mi carrera profesional”.
Zaidi explica que el enfoque práctico y las pruebas de evaluación continua (PEC) son algunos de los aspectos que más le están sorprendiendo del programa. “He estudiado en otras universidades españolas a distancia y me temía otro aluvión de teórica y libros que leer. Sin embargo, la UOC usa un enfoque práctico que me ha encantado y con el que estoy aprendiendo mucho. Todos los conocimientos que estoy adquiriendo me parecen superútiles: desde HTML y accesibilidad hasta conceptos más teóricos como el enfoque al desarrollo de software”, relata. También destaca la labor y la disponibilidad del profesorado y de su tutor, que “siempre está disponible para hacer una videollamada si es necesario”.
Actualmente, Zaidi trabaja en la empresa Aircall.io, pero a lo largo de su trayectoria profesional ha trabajado para grandes empresas internacionales. Precisamente uno de los aspectos que también valora positivamente del grado es que se imparta íntegramente en inglés. “En el mundo del desarrollo de software y desarrollo web el idioma oficial es el inglés, de manera que si hablas y entiendes bien esta lengua tendrás acceso a más recursos, gente y comunidades”, concluye.
El consejo de Nordin Zaidi para futuros estudiantes
“Analiza tu situación personal y si puedes invertir tiempo en cursar el grado, hazlo. El programa te dará unos conocimientos que no te van a dar en ningún bootcamp o tutorial de Youtube. Es cierto que te llevará mucho más tiempo, pero si lo puedes invertir, después tendrás unos cimientos sólidos sobre los que construir tu futuro profesional”.

The UOC Bachelor’s Degree in Software Development: students give their opinions
Looking for a career move into software development? Nowadays, software developers are some of the most sought-after profiles by companies at European and worldwide levels. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts growth of 22% from 2019 to 2029 in software development job offers. Additionally, the Fundación Telefónica, Infojobs and Tecnoempleo Employment map indicates that jobs in software development, web development and systems administration are those most in demand in Spain, with growth of nearly 20% over 2021.
Given the high demand for experts in these fields, 2021 saw the launch of the UOC Bachelor’s Degree in Techniques for Software Application Development. The goal? To provide knowledge on the process of developing software and all the stages of the lifecycle, as well as on the programming languages, tools and technologies most frequently used to build software solutions for different platforms.
Now that the first academic year has been completed, let’s take a look at the experiences of Jana Kunecova and Nordin Zaidi, two students on our Bachelor’s Degree in Software Development. Don’t miss it!
Jana Kunecova: «It’s been a highly enriching experience: I’m now able to understand what programming entails and get an introduction into different topics»
Jana Kunecova is a predoctoral researcher at the University of Girona, a duty she combines with her job as an accredited advisor at ACCIÓ. Kunecova says she’s always been interested in computer science and telecommunications. That’s why she decided, in September 2021, to study for the UOC’s Bachelor’s Degree in Techniques for Software Application Development. «I’ve always liked maths and, when I had to decide what to study at university, the choice was between telecommunications and international trade. In the end, I opted for international trade, a field in which I worked for more than 10 years. However, I was still interested in computer science so, when I found out about this new online bachelor’s degree from the UOC, I decided to give it a try«, she explained.
Now that she’s completed the first year of the degree programme, she said that «it’s been a highly enriching experience«. «I’ve been able to get an introduction into different topics and begin to get an idea of what programming entails. In lots of courses, I’ve enjoyed great support from the teaching staff to continue progressing, and on other occasions I’ve also looked for help from the student community,» she explained. And she warned: «The courses are more difficult than subjects on other programmes, so you have to bear in mind that you need to set more time aside for them.»
Kunecova said that, for her, one of the most surprising things about the programme was the tools and technologies presented in the different courses. «The tools I’ve liked the most have been CalcMe for maths, CodePen for web design and Codelite for programming in C», she said. What’s more, she thought that the Bachelor’s Degree in Software Development could help her find an opening in the bioengineering and artificial intelligence sector, as well as giving her the chance to work in an international company after graduation.
To balance her studies with her professional and personal life, Kunecova organizes her diary carefully. «I’ve organized every hour of the day (and sometimes of the night) divided between work, studies, the family and sport. I really love trail running: I think it’s important to do exercise to be in good physical shape to be able to tackle all your tasks successfully.»
Jana Kunecova’s advice for future students
«Make sure to properly work out the number of hours per week you can spend studying and, based on that number, calculate how many courses you can take. Get support from the student community and teaching staff at all times. Slowly but surely, you’ll begin to enjoy it».
Nordin Zaidi: «I’ve learned a lot since day one. I want to continue to progress to be able to graduate and improve in my career at work»
After seven years teaching himself about software development, Nordin Zaidi decided to start on the Bachelor’s Degree in Software Development at the UOC. «I felt I needed to put my knowledge on a more formal footing and follow a specific programme to be able to make the leap to the next level. I wanted to specialize in software development and leave other aspects of computer engineering aside. It was then that I came across the UOC bachelor’s degree and found exactly what I needed,» he said.
After two semesters on the programme, he says that he doesn’t regret beginning his studies. «Although I’d studied on my own and had quite a lot of work experience, I’ve learned a lot since day one. I feel that everything I’d studied before is becoming more solid with the structure that the UOC is providing […] the knowledge I’ve obtained over the first academic year is helping me in my job. I hope to continue progressing, learning and to obtain the degree as a matter of pride, to show that it’s possible at any age, whatever commitments you may have, and to help me in my professional career.»
Zaidi explained that the practical focus and the continuous assessment activities were some of the aspects that surprised him the most about the programme. «I’ve studied at other Spanish distance universities and I was worried about another avalanche of theory and books to read. However, the UOC uses a practical focus that I love and which has meant I’ve learned a lot. I think all the knowledge I’m acquiring is incredibly useful: from HTML and accessibility to the more theoretical concepts such as the focus on software development.» He also highlighted the work and availability of teaching staff and his tutor, who «is always available for a video call if necessary».
Currently, Zaidi is working at Aircall.io, but he has, over the course of his professional career, had jobs at large international corporations. And another of the aspects he appreciates is that the bachelor’s degree programme is taught entirely in English. «In the world of software and web development, the official language is English, so if you speak and understand it well, you’ll have access to more resources, people and communities,» he concluded.
Nordin Zaidi’s advice for future students
«Analyse your personal situation and, if you can afford the time to study for the degree, do it. The programme will give you knowledge that can’t be found in any bootcamp or YouTube tutorial. It’s true that it’ll take much more time but, if you can make that investment, afterwards you’ll have solid foundations upon which to build your professional future.»
