Internal feedback strategies for the deployment of the new competence curricula: towards the self-regulation of student learning

Participating Schools

The OE3 objective of EFICCA3 seeks to identify successful practices on internalised feedback processes for the self-regulation of students in international and local educational centres. Based on this identification, the OE4 objective foresees the analysis of the key processes for the assurance of these practices. Below, we present how we have selected the centers that participate in EFICCA3. In the following entries, you can learn more about the participating secondary education centres:

Selection process for participating local secondary schools

Step 1: Development of a tool to identify cases of interest

We have developed a checklist that includes 18 aspects that link, according to academic publications in this regard, to self-regulated learning (SRL), feedback and formative assessment processes, etc.

2nd step: Identification of schools of interest for the answering of the checklist

To ensure that we reach with the checklist at education centres likely to have some practice of interest, we have combined different strategies to identify centres:

  1. Centres that participate or have participated in the last three courses in innovation programs related to issues of evaluation, self-regulation or competence learning
  2. Centres whose teachers have published classroom experiences related to feedback and self-regulation issues since 2020/21 in outreach journals for the teaching community (Aula, Aula de Secondary (in Catalan and Spanish), Cuadernos de Pedagogía, DYLE, Forum and Guix),
  3. Centres recommended by consulted experts who know their work in the field of interest (other researchers, AvaluarPerAprendre, a CRP, etc.).

In total, we identified 90 public schools and 10 private schools in Catalonia.

3rd step: Checklist implementation

After authorization from the Catalan Research Service regarding public centres, all the centers identified were invited to participate in the project by completing the checklist. Beyond the checklist, the form created required information on participation in teaching innovation projects related to assessment and offered the possibility of providing additional materials. The checklist received answers from the end of October 2024 to the middle of November 2024 and closed with 34 responses with informed consent, coming from 23 different centres.

4th step: Checklist Analysis

Once the checklist was closed, a prioritisation of the answers was made:

  1. 4 centres indicated to participate in a teaching innovation project on assessment, provided extra material and marked 17 or 18 items of the checklist
  2. 3 centres indicated to participate in an innovation project on evaluation and marked 17 or 18 items of the checklist, without providing more materials
  3. 5 centres marked 17 or 18 items of the checklist, but did not have any teaching innovation projects related to assessment.

5th step: Invitation of the identified centres and visits to the centres

All 12 selected centres were invited to participate in the project as a case study. 10 centres agreed to receive the visit of EFICCA3. Visits were made from January to May 2025.
