Teaching and Research Staff

Eduard J. Alvarez-Palau (ORCID)

Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business and Principal Investigator of URBANLOG research group. He holds a PhD in Transport Engineering and Infrastructure (UPC), a degree in Civil Engineering (UPC), and a Master’s in Organisation Management (UOC). Previously, he has been a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge (CAMPOP), a European Commission fellow (DG MOVE), an associate professor at UPC, and a part-time lecturer at UOC. He has conducted research stays at the universities of Cambridge, California Irvine, Gothenburg, Koç, and Nacional de La Plata. He also has experience in managing projects in engineering, urban planning, and transport. His research interests focus on mapping, modelling, simulating, and evaluating changes induced by technological, infrastructural, or managerial transport innovations in various fields, including geography, history, economics, and business.

Cristian Castillo Gutiérrez (ORCID)

PhD in Business Administration, he holds a Master’s in Industrial Organisation Engineering and is a technical engineer in Industrial Electronics from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). He is currently the academic director of continuing education in the areas of production, quality, and the environment, as well as a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics and Business at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). His academic activity focuses on subjects related to production and logistics operations. He is also a part-time lecturer at TecnoCampus Mataró-Maresme, a centre affiliated with Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). Before his teaching career, he accumulated fifteen years of experience in the private sector, where he held several logistics management positions. His research interests focus on the field of logistics and production operations within companies, as well as business organisation, particularly in the area of organisational change.

Maryna Chepurna (ORCID)

PhD in Marketing and Entrepreneurship from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She holds a Master’s in Economic and Business Research and another in Business Administration and Management (MBA). She is currently undertaking an INVESTIGO postdoctoral fellowship in the field of transport and logistics as part of the URBANLOG research group at the Open University of Catalonia.

Carmen Pacheco-Bernal (ORCID)

PhD in Information and Knowledge Society from the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). She holds a degree in Market Research and Techniques and a diploma in Business Science from the University of Barcelona, with a major in quantitative methods. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Economics and Business and the academic director of the Bachelor’s programme in Marketing and Market Research. Her teaching and research focus on digital marketing, with a particular interest in online and mobile marketing research, as well as sustainable consumption.

Albert Puig Gómez (ORCID)

PhD in Economics from the University of Barcelona. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics and Business at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), where he has also served as the academic director of the Master’s programme in Economic Environment Analysis for over five years. Previously, he was a Lecturer at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Barcelona. His teaching focuses on areas such as economic policy, the Spanish economy, and the European economy. He is a member of the URBANLOG research group, and his research interests include applied economic analysis, global value chains, and international economic policies.

Iu Tusell (ORCID)

PhD in Business Management from the University of Sussex, Master in Corporate Social Responsibility from the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), and Cooperative Economics from IGOP-UAB. He is currently a Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics and Business, specialising in Supply Chain and Operations Management. His research focuses on sustainability throughout supply chains and the analysis of the socio-economic impacts of business operations, with a particular interest in labour and social aspects. Among his key interests are the study of modern slavery and labour exploitation in the early stages of supply chains, the effective and equitable inclusion of social actors in the design of sustainability policies, and multistakeholder collaborations to address major global sustainability challenges.

Marta Viu Roig (ORCID)

PhD in Business ADministration. She holds a Master’s degree in Marketing and Applied Business Techniques in Distribution and a Bachelor in Economics and Business from the University of Barcelona. She is currently an Associate Professor at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) and the academic director of the Master’s programme in Logistics Management. She is a member of the URBANLOG research group, and her research interests include last-mile delivery and supply chain management. Her teaching excellence has been recognised with the achievement of two teaching merits, and her research has been acknowledged with a six-year research merit (CNEAI/ANECA).

Beatriz Pierri-Daunt (ORCID)

PhD in Geography from São Paulo State University (UNESP), with a Master’s in Ecology and Natural Resources and a degree in Environmental Sciences. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) in the field of urbanisation and land-use planning. She is also affiliated with the ICTA institute at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), where she previously worked as a doctoral researcher with fellowships from the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Maria Zambrano programme. She is a member of the executive committee of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE-Europe).

Zahra Behrouzmoghadam (ORCID)

PhD candidate in the Society, Technology, and Culture programme at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). She holds a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning and a Bachelor’s in Urban Planning. She has collaborated as a research assistant with the University of Lleida, analysing the relationship between population and transport infrastructure in Europe, as well as with the UOC. Her research interests include the integration of GIS tools in urban planning and the study of the impacts of transport systems on urban development.

Gianmarco Bisogno (ORCID)

PhD candidate in Business and Management at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, focusing on the role of customers in B2C supply chain management. Currently serving as an Operations Assistant at Cartesar SpA, he specialises in optimising sales and distribution processes. With a background in humanities and extensive professional experience, he combines analytical and strategic skills to implement sustainable and data-driven supply chain solutions.

Juan Miguel Calero (ORCID)

PhD candidate in Economics within the Law, Economics, and Business programme at the University of Vic. He holds a Master’s in Economic Environment Analysis and another in Economic Analysis from the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). He has a diploma in Business Sciences from Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). Currently, he is part of the URBANLOG research group as a research assistant, a role he combines with his teaching duties in high school education. His academic and research interests focus on labour economics and urban logistics.

Ali Maddahi (ORCID)

Ali Maddahi is an urban planner, GIS specialist, and researcher in the URBANLOG group. His research focuses on the relationship between transport systems, land use changes, and their socio-economic impacts. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), where he uses GIS tools and spatial analysis to study how transport infrastructure influences urban development and the spatial distribution of economic activities in Southern Europe. His work aims to provide practical insights for improving transport planning and urban growth strategies.

Beatriz Martin (ORCID)

Industrial Engineer (ICAI) with a master’s degree in Supply Chain, Operations Management, and Logistics (UNED). Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. She has over 15 years of professional experience as a consultant in supply chains for the automotive, railway, and elevator installation industries. She combines her work in the industry with teaching positions on logistics, including delivering lectures and supervising final degree projects.

Thierry Otero (ORCID)

Master’s in Logistics (UOC) and Bachelor’s in Industrial Organisation Engineering (UNIR). He currently works as a research assistant in the URBANLOG research group. His research areas focus on business process optimisation, logistics, and operations. Additionally, he has experience in the management, maintenance, and storage of fuels, hydrocarbons, and chemicals in the private sector.
