MACBA, Barcelona. November 19 – online. Let’s talk about I have come out to listen to the noise of the leaves under the weight of my step, in Fina Miralles. I am all the ones I have been, with Maite Garbayo, an art historian and researcher, in conversation with Fina Miralles.
For Fina Miralles there is a thread that runs through her life and her artistic practice: the thread of nature, which has been shown in various ways and through different subjects. The images remain, which, clinging to each other, allow to reveal the bond of having belonged. For the artist, they are a testimony of what one has done, because she couldn’t do anything else or because we do what, for some reason, we had to do. Maite Garbayo has always believed that Fina’s works are part of a continuum in which knowledge about the body is transmitted and updated. These can be read as gestures of dissent in the face of aestheticized and aesthetically naturalized representations of the female body. They show that there is something about having to exist in the feminine that is violent and traumatic in itself.

The Museo Reina Sofía presents a new series of publications under the title Carta (s), with which it seeks to expand in editorial format some of the debates that take place both in the institution and beyond its walls. As a result of a joint project of the Editorial Activities and Public Activities departments, Carta (s) aims to make visible the resonances between initiatives promoted or welcomed by the different lines of research and artistic and critical production of the Museum.
This fifth issue of Carta (s) takes its name from Incomplete Times (Chile, First Neoliberal Laboratory), an exhibition curated by Nelly Richard that took place at the Museo Reina Sofía in 2019. The publication serves as a platform to establish a dialogue around memory and political struggle, taking the dictatorship and transition in Chile as an object of study and context in which the reflection is situated.

To understand the developments in contemporary artistic practices, we naturally turn to historical approaches. It is in the history of art where we find various keys to unravel the productions of the present. However, in a time of uncertainty like the one we are going through, in the midst of a health and economic crisis on a global scale, we face the urgency to point out and imagine new futures. In this sense, and unlike our courses on art history, always linked to reflection on the promises of 20th century artistic developments, in this program we convene different voices focused on speculation and imagination of new possibilities for the future. As is natural at the end of the second decade of the 21st century, many of these voices invite us to question and rethink the validity in the present of old structures –colonial, patriarchal, political– from different epistemological perspectives, as well as through the putting into action of notions such as care, vulnerability, the role of joy and hope.
