The 7th International Workshop on the Sharing Economy will take place on 24th-26th February 2021, hosted by the Faculty of Economics and Business of the Open University of Catalonia UOC

Given the enormous impact that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the sharing/platform economy worldwide, several participants of the workshop were invited to take part in a video series entitled ‘UOC Sharing Economy – post-Covid19 perspectives’.

This specially-commissioned video series features eight presenters from the 7th IWSE programme, each sharing their own perspectives and projections on how the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to affect different dimensions of the sharing economy in the short, medium and long term, in the specific context of their own particular research on the sharing /platform economy.

In this chapter of the audiovisual series «Sharing Economy UOC, Post-COVID19 Perspectives», Nanjing University of Science and Technology researcher Fu Qian analyses the experience and behaviour of WeChat users during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As Fu Qian explained, «In the fight against coronavirus, the digital community plays an important role. However, some scholars suggest that digital tools are double-edged swords». On one hand, the digital community is conducive to collecting reliable, consistent and time-bound information. However, on the other hand, the abuse of digital tools may have a negative effect.

The study performed by Qian explores how a more cooperative digital community with less negative impact can be developed by focusing on two factors: «engagement and self-disclosure, which are considered important indexes of voluntary sharing among WeChat users». In Qian’s opinion, WeChat users’ time perspectives and personality traits may influence these factors.
