The 7th International Workshop on the Sharing Economy took place on 24th-26th February 2021, hosted by the Faculty of Economics and Business of the Open University of Catalonia UOC

Given the enormous impact that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the sharing/platform economy worldwide, several participants of the workshop were invited to take part in a video series entitled ‘UOC Sharing Economy – post-Covid19 perspectives’.

This specially-commissioned video series features eight presenters from the 7th IWSE programme, each sharing their own perspectives and projections on how the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to affect different dimensions of the sharing economy in the short, medium and long term, in the specific context of their own particular research on the sharing /platform economy.

In this chapter of the audiovisual series “Sharing Economy UOC, Post-COVID19 Perspectives”, Jelena Starcevic, professor at the Monterrey Institute of Technology (Mexico), presents her research on the future of ride-hailing services.

As Starcevic explains, “with social distancing and reduced mobility, the ride-hailing sector was particularly hard-hit, reporting a 70–80% drop in business”. The drivers in this ride-hailing sector were most negatively impacted by the pandemic and, “being independent workers, they were not eligible for any labour or social protection”.

The professor believes that, after the pandemic, there must be “a change in the regulation of the status of drivers in the ride-hailing sector”, and she hopes that “in the future, we will see a significant improvement in work conditions in this segment of the sharing economy”.
