Research and Case Studies
The project is structured into three key areas of work that seek to explore and analyze different dimensions of inequalities in access to and participation in the cultural life of the city.
Area I: Cultural Participation Survey: This area focuses on detecting the main factors that condition inequalities in the right to participate in the cultural life of Barcelona. Based on the analysis of the Cultural Participation and Rights Survey of Barcelona (2019-2022), it investigates participation profiles and the factors influencing these inequalities. Aspects such as territorial, gender, and origin differences, as well as the influence of the pandemic on cultural participation and access to digital culture, are addressed.
Area II: Cultural Policies in the City of Barcelona and Inequality: The objective of this area is to analyze the municipal cultural policies implemented in Barcelona between 2019 and 2022, specifically those aimed at reducing inequalities in access to cultural life. It seeks to identify what types of policies are being developed, how the public problem of inequality is addressed, and how these policies attempt to ensure more equitable access to culture.
Area III: Case Studies: This area will study specific programs and projects that promote cultural participation in Barcelona, both from the City Council and from private and community cultural agents. The analysis will focus on the strategies these initiatives implement to foster equity, considering factors such as the neighborhood, migrant origin, and the gender of participants. The results obtained in terms of equity will also be examined, highlighting advances and limitations.
Area I: Cultural Participation Survey
Objective: Detect the main factors that condition inequalities in the right to participate in the cultural life of the city.

Analysis of the Cultural Participation/Rights Survey of Barcelona (2019-2022): participation profiles and the weight of conditioning factors.
About inequalities in the right to participate in the cultural life of the city:
- Multidimensional: access, practice, community, and decision.
- Conditioned by multiple factors simultaneously. Importance of: territory/neighborhood, origin (migration), and gender.
- Non-legitimized culture = less inequality, but new logics of differentiation and distinction.
- Increase during the pandemic + digital participation does not equal more equity.
Area II: Cultural Policies in the City of Barcelona and Inequality

Objective: Analyze the municipal cultural policies of Barcelona during the period 2019-2022, specifically those that address the right to participate in the cultural life of the city.
In this part of the project, we want to answer: What types of cultural policies are developed to address inequalities in the right to participate in the cultural life of the city, and how is the public problem of inequality constructed within these policies?
Area III: Case Studies
Objective: Analyze specific programs and projects that promote cultural participation in Barcelona, including actions promoted by both the City Council and private and community cultural agents. The temporal period is from 2019 to 2022, but we understand that there is room to include cases that currently have continuity.
- Study the strategies for promoting equity in cultural participation implemented by these initiatives, identifying the role of territory (neighborhood), origin (migration), and gender of individuals.
- Identify which “cultural assets” (spaces, people, and communities) are involved in promoting equity in cultural participation.
- Analyze the results of these actions in terms of equity (advances and limitations).
