Josep A. Planell

Josep A. Planell Estany (born Barcelona, 1951) graduated from the University of Barcelona in 1975 and earned his doctorate in Material Sciences from Queen Mary, University of London in 1983. Since 1992 he has been full professor in the Material Science and Metallurgy department of the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). In December 2005, Dr Planell founded the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC),  linked to the UPC and University of Barcelona.

He successfully ran the IBEC until 2013 and was awarded several awards from the Catalan government for his role in the promotion of the university research, as well as numerous European and international titles of scientific distinction. The most recent one is the George Winter Award 2013, the highest European recognition for outstanding research contribution to the field of biomaterials.

In April 2013 Professor Planell was appointed the President of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC).

His main research interests are biomaterials and tissue engineering for regenerative therapies.
